A68 Fala Dam

13 August 2020

Guidance on diversion route

Drivers of high-sided or HGV vehicles are being urged to follow the approved diversion route, while the A68 at Fala Dam is closed as the result of damage caused by severe flooding on Wednesday 12th August 2020.

The diversion route is agreed with the local authority and Transport Scotland and was chosen because it has no tunnels or weight restrictions. Drivers ignoring the signed diversion route and attempting to travel via local or back roads are likely to get into difficulty and bring further disruption to the network.

The agreed diversion is below:

  • Northbound traffic is diverted to the A6091 and at the junction with the A7 continues via Galashiels, Stow and Fountainhall. From here, vehicles join the B6458 to re-join the A68 at Tynehead junction.
  • Southbound traffic is directed to follow the same diversion in the opposite direction.

Additional and enhanced advance signage has been continually added since the closure in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The damaged section of carriageway has been fenced off while geotechnical investigations are carried out. The results of these investigations will inform the proposed solution.
